MELBOURNE has beaten Sydney to be voted Australia's best city in a survey of travellers, while the bushfire-plagued Margaret River was named best town.

The survey of more than 1000 readers of Australian Traveller magazine found Melbourne was the favoured city for its sporting events, shopping and laneway cafes and bars.

Destination Melbourne chief executive Chris Buckingham said Melbournians would enjoy the "warm inner glow'' that comes with gaining national acknowledgement at the awards, which were announced in Sydney.

"For more than a hundred years Melbourne was seen as Australia's second city,'' he said.

"People like coming to Melbourne because we are a welcoming destination that celebrates cool and accepts difference.

"We love the validation that comes from the millions of visitors that grace our streets every year.''

Sydney claimed the awards for best restaurant, best bar, best tour and favourite place for a weekend getaway.

Embattled national carrier Qantas was named best major airline in the survey, which was conducted just before the fleet was grounded.

Margaret River in Western Australia was recognised for its wineries, restaurants and farm gates, as well as its rural charm and fierce surf breaks.

Justin Hemme's mega-venue The Ivy was the country's best bar and Quay restaurant at Circular Quay - which serves the snow egg dessert made famous by Masterchef - the best restaurant.

BridgeClimb Sydney - an experience even Oprah Winfrey has ticked off the bucket list - was named the best guided tour in Australia.

Cable Beach Club Resort & Spa in Western Australia was named Australia's best resort, Palazzo Versace on the Gold Coast was named best luxury hotel and Novotel got the gong for best affordable hotel brand.

Glass on Glasshouse in Queensland's Sunshine Coast hinterland received the award for best bed and breakfast and Clarkes Beach Holiday Park near Byron Bay was best caravan park.

Victoria's Great Ocean Road was named best driving experience in the country while The Ghan got the nod from train fans.

The awards are the only consumer awards for tourism in Australia.

The results are published today in Australian Traveller magazine.
